New Rankings Posted

The new rankings have been posted.

In more exciting news, after much work over the past few week I am ready to revamp the rankings bringing in more variables to the equation to better judge teams based on regional strength.

In the coming weeks, teams will be able to qualify for additional rankings points by playing better competition. Regions like the WCRHL will benifit from having so many quality teams in their region. Teams from weaker regions will also suffer because the additional bonus points acquired from playing the top ranked teams will not be available.

Also, there have been many complaints recently about the historical significance playing a role in teams rankings. At the beginning of the year this is weight a lot more than by the end of the season. ELO rankings should be considered "conditional" until a team has played at least 15 games. Because of the nature of the NCRHA it doesn't make sense to exclude teams that have played less than 15. Rest assured that come time for the regional and national championships the rankings should be the most accurate of the season. A final note is that the Formula used to predict the winners of games this season is a remarkable 94% (excluding ties).

New Rankings Posted

With the season moving into full swing the rankings have been expanded to include 20 Division I teams and 25 Division II teams. The decision to expand the poll was made at the begging of the season, but with the delayed start for some teams regular season, the expansion of the poll had to wait.

Currently the rankings are missing important games from the MCRHL, SCHL and SECRHL. Those games are not currently calculated into the rankings. Normally the rankings would be adjusted midweek to reflect those scores, but I am going on vacation this week and won't be back until next Monday night. There is a good possibility the rankings will be posted on Tuesday next week as well.

***EDIT***
I meant to add the B rankings this week. Since I didn't add it before i posted all the other rankings, I will add the rankings to the DIII Rankings Post. Please remember that this point, 14 B teams have yet to play a game this season. Those teams will not be eligible for the rankings until they play at least one game. Next week the B rankings will have a post to themselves.

Good Luck! to all the teams competing this weekend.

Rankings Updated - 10/27/08

In Division I, UC Irvine jumped over UMSL into the #2 spot in the rankings behind perennial #1 Lindenwood. UMSL has yet to play this season and could retain the #2 spot once they start playing games. Rhode Island used a 6-2 victory over Towson to jump four spots into the #7 hole. Rhode Island is less than two years removed from an appearance in the national championship game. UNLV moved into the #12 spot after a strong 3-1-0 start to their season.

In Division II, West Chester closed the gap on Neumann College after beating them for the 2nd time this season. However, it was not enough to move them atop the rankings and they remain at #2. It seems like its only a matter of time until West Chester knocks Neumann out of the top spot, a spot they have held for the last 245 days. Cal Poly Pomona fell down to #4 after losing three games to start the season. Pomona dropped over 150 points and will fall even further if they can't right the ship fast. Florida Atlantic and Rowan University make their first appearance in the rankings after strong weekends.

In the Junior College Division, Saddleback and Valencia both had impressive debuts in the NCRHA and have moved into the #2 & #3 spots respectively. With the addition of these two teams, it appears the JC Division will again be one of the most exciting Divisions at nationals.

Good luck & safe travels to all the teams competing this weekend around the nation.

Rankings Updated - 10/20/08

The rankings have returned after the third week of the NCRHA season. With teams in Colorado, Ohio and Pennsylvania playing, there were some changes in the rankings.

In Division I, Ohio State jumped into the rankings behind a pair of victories over unranked Purdue. Ohio State comes into the rankings in the 14th position. Rutgers University had a outstanding weekend, topping 5th ranked Buffalo by a 5-1 score. Rutgers jumped all the way into the 9th spot by virtue of their 4-0 weekend.

In Division II, the poll was expanded to include five more teams. Originally the plan was to expand the poll to 25 teams. However, it didn't make sense at this point in the season with so many teams that still have yet to play a game. And the teams that have played, the majority have only played exhibition games. Look for the rankings to expand into the top 25 in January.

Enjoy the week! And good luck this weekend.

New Rankings Posted

The rankings have been posted, taking in account all of the games played this past weekend. Looking at the rankings, you might notice that some teams that struggled this past weekend still have a high rankings. Remember, that since they played exhibition games, the value of the contest was as low as possible. If their struggles continue in regional play (regular season), they will fall pretty quickly out of the rankings.

Please vote in the poll on the right hand side of the page. The results will be taking into account in regards to whether or not the DII poll is expanded or not.

Any questions or comments, please send them to indrankcom@gmail.com.

Official Pre-Season Rankings

The official rankings for the 2008-2009 season will be posted as soon teams make their commitments to the new divisional structure.

DIII (Junior College) Rankings Suspended

Because of the small size and nature of the division there will no longer be Junior College rankings provided by the IRC. In the future if the amount of teams in the Division grows we will bring the rankings back.

New Rankings!

Over the past two seasons, the Independent Rankings Committee has provided a survey based ranking system as a service to the players of the NCRHA. In the beginning it started with just two voting members who were tired with the lack of national rankings and took things into their own hands. Before the third set of rankings was released a total of eight voting members had been achieved across all the NCRHA regions.

However, the great success turned to feuding over how the rankings were calculated with several members leaving the committee during last season. The majority of the spots were filled over the season but the original idea of the IRC was outdated and needed to be improved.

Since the conclusion of the season both founders set out to find the best solution to answer the age old question, “Who’s #1?” After much search, the answer was to use a mathematical formula to calculate the answer. Removing the human element from the voting would likely result in less biased rankings towards individual teams and regions.

The solution would be found in the ELO chess rating system. They system was created to rank chess players by another means that wins, losses and draws. The system uses a mathematical formula to reward each person for impressive feats and punish them for lesser impressive feats. Because chess and inline hockey are two different animals, the general equation had to be changed to allow for more hockeys related factors into the equation.

Using the FIFA Women’s World Rankings as a guideline (Elo Based), we managed to change the rankings to suit the nature of our sport. The rankings include the importance of the game, the outcome of the game, the expected result of the game, and the goal differential of the game when calculating a result. To better explain the way the rankings work I give you the following examples (all team start with a ranking of 1500):

Lindenwood University (1500) vs. UMSL (1500): If Lindenwood won the regular season game 4-3; they would be awarded 15 points for the victory and UMSL would be docked 15 points. However, if the game was won 12-2, Lindenwood would earn 39.38 points for the victory and UMSL would be docked 39.38 points. Additionally, the importance of the game could change, using the national title game as the example, with both teams having equal ratings Lindenwood would be awarded 52.5 points for a 6-3 win.

However, as you could assume, two teams having the same rating would be rare. Each teams point total carries over from one week to the next and from one season to the next. The following is a example of two teams with different point values and the different results it can produce.

Lindenwood University (1746.38) vs. Illinois State (1360.88): There are a few things that you can determine because of the vast difference in each teams rating (385.5). The first is that Lindenwood is expected to win the game. The second is that Illinois State winning the game would be a much bigger accomplishment that Lindenwood winning the game. The maximum points Lindenwood can earn from this game is 7.72, which would mean they won by at least 10 goals. However, on the flip side, if Illinois State was to win the game by at least 10 goals they could earn as many as 71.03 points. This is based on the projection that Lindenwood would win the match-up 90% of the time.

As the two examples show, there are a bunch of positives when using this system. For starters, once a team has achieved a high rating, it becomes difficult for them to increase it without playing a higher level of competition. This rewards regions that have more competitive teams. It also rewards teams who travel out of the region and win games against other higher rated teams. For example, last season, Towson and Army both played James Madison who would have had a higher rating that both visiting teams. In the games, Army and Towson both won handily and would have increased their ratings while negatively hurting James Madison. But, the hidden bonus is they now can bring those rating points back into their region. Those points then become spread out over the entire region as the season progresses and teams win and lose.

For the ratings system to work, each game has to have a certain amount of value attached to it. In the system we will be using five different levels to rate the importance of any give game. The first level is the lowest level of importance; it contains all pre-season exhibition games. The second level includes all regular-season regional games, as well as cross-divisional exhibition games. Level three includes all cross-regional games and invitational based tournaments, like WinterFest. The fourth level includes all regional playoff games and the fifth and final level includes all national playoff games.

Because of the nature of the rankings, only Division I, II and III schools will be ranked. Any Division I, II, or III school that plays a B team will not have that result factored into their ranking.

If you have any question on the new ranking system, please feel free to email us at indrankcom@gmail.com

New Rankings Posted!

There were no changes in the polls with no NCRHA teams playing this past weekend. With a few weeks to go until the national tournament there shouldn't be too much movement in the polls.

Three new poll questions are posted this week. Each has to deal with the final teams left out of this years national tournament. The East edged out the Great Plains last week to determine what region had the most visitors to the site.

Good Luck to all the teams in their final preparations for the national tournament.

Message To The Readers

Starting 2/28/08, the IRC will be making a change that should slightly alter the rankings in each division. Over the past two years we have spent a good deal of time making sure that we can get the most accurate rankings in the country by spending countless hours at rinks around the country.

Starting with next weeks rankings, we will be having a new voting member and a new way to display the rankings each week. Currently each team is listed but there is no indication as to how many "points" each team has accumulated through the voting process as you would find when you read Associated Press polls, USA Today polls or even the BCS polls. So now we will attach a numerical number based on the amount of votes each team is awarded by the seven member panel.

Team who are getting first place votes will know how many of the seven voters think they are the top team in the country. Additionally, showing the voting totals, will allow those teams who just missed the rankings and are sitting in the spots just outside the top 15 know where they stand when the are mentioned in the "Additional Teams Receiving Votes" section.

Points will be awarded with 15 points to each first place vote and 1 point to each fifteenth place vote. Any question or concerns with the new way the rankings are going to be displayed, please email IndRankCom@gmail.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank You for sticking with the IRC National Rankings.

Around the Nation - Week 14

In Divison I, Lindenwood University extended its national record of 33 consecutive weeks ranked atop of the IRC rankings. Stony Brook moved into the second spot after Michigan State was beaten by 11th ranked Eastern Michigan over the weekend. UMSL moved into the third spot just ahead of UC Irvine. No teams dropped out of the DI poll this week.

In Division II, Neumann College finished off a perfect regular season for the first time in school history and remain the top team in the rankings for a record-tying 16 weeks. West Chester and UC San Diego both jumped up two spots after Truman State dropped their first game of the season. Washington (STL) and Southern Illinois both joined the rankings after strong performances this weekend knocking Maine and Sam Houston State from the top 15.

The only change in the DIII poll was Oakland from the MCRHL jumped over Arapahoe into the third spot in the poll. Broward stayed on top for the fourth consecutive poll and have established themselves as the favorites to win the national championship but close on their heels is the seven-time national champion St. Charles.

For the first time in the 25 editions of the B National Rankings, Lindenwood University Gold was not ranked as the #1 team in the land. Lindenwood went wire to wire last year as the top ranked team, winning their fourth straight national championship. Buffalo and Michigan both jumped over Lindenwood for the top two spots respectively. The only other undefeated team in the poll sits at number five, North Texas. No new teams jumped into the poll after this week.

Anyone who has any game photos from this season is encouraged to email them to IndRankCom@gmail.com and they can be posted along side the rankings. Any questions and concerns can also be answered by sending your question to the same address. Thank You for taking your time to visit the weekly IRC National Rankings.

IRC National Rankings Return

On December 7th, the IRC released the Mid-Season All-American Team. What happened in the immediate aftermath almost brought and end to the weekly national rankings. Three of the voting members of the IRC resigned at the conclusion of the semester, two for personal reasons, and another who was disappointed with adding new voting members to the original IRC. After a lengthy search and countless emails, the IRC has finally appointed three new members and now launches the first new rankings of the year.

The IRC would like to ask anyone who has current game pictures to please email them to IndRankCom@gmail.com so that we may feature them on the site. Additionally, if anyone has any questions, comments, concerns or idea's they would like to present to the IRC, please use the same address and your email's will be answered accordingly.

Thank You for sticking with the IRC and we hope to continue to produce quality rankings every week for the remainder of the season.

The Rankings Explained
